Clary Sage Essential Oil (salvia sclarea) is steam distilled from the flowers and leaves of the herb which has a sweet satisfying, herbaceous fragrance.Clary Sage used to be grown in Germany around vines and was added to Muscatel wines - this was its first commercial use. Today it is still used in the making of Vermouth. In 1562 Clary Sage was introduced into Britain where it sometimes replaced hops for making beer.
Many aromatherapists will use Clary Sage instead of Sage - they have similar characteristics but Sage contains Thujone giving it a high toxicity level.
